While moving to a new place can be an exciting adventure for many of us, the actual process of packing and moving your stuff from one place to another is for sure a burden for many. The idea of having to uproot all your things from closets and rooms is discouraging enough without adding the fact that you will probably have to pay a lot of money for hiring a moving company.
If you don’t have a generous budget for the men and trucks that will help you move house or, why not, office, these 4 tips will definitely help you getting a great deal, while protecting your wallet from an unwanted financial earthquake.
1. Do your research, but avoid hiring really cheap moving companies
Do your research and find reliable movers in USA, even though their service might cost you a little extra. We know that it’s very tempting to hire a no-name moving company that promises you impeccable services and the moon for an unbelievable low price but, as usual, if it’s too good to be true, it usually is. If you choose to work with a cheap moving company, you can be pretty sure you will get what you pay for. Also, stay away from working with unlicensed and insured moving guys. If an accident were to happen while they moving your stuff, you will be the one paying for hospital bills and law suits.
2. If possible, stick to two men and a truck
Although “two men and a truck” might seem like a good title for a romantic comedy, it sometimes can turn into a real drama, if you don’t know which moving company to choose. While you may think that getting more men to help you move your things will save you time, and you might be right, it will also costs you a lot more. On average, the cost of hiring two men and a truck will take you somewhere between $80 and $100 per hour. For each man you decide to add to your moving team, you will have to pay an additional $15 to $20 per hour. And yes, travel time is always timed and added to the bill. These rates apply to local moving. If you decide to change cities or states, the math is going to be a lot different. So, if you don’t have a lot of stuff to move, two men and a truck will definitely do the trick.
3. Move off season
This might be tricky because there are circumstances when moving is not up to you, but if you were to have a choice, choose to move off season. Just like plane tickets, hotels and attractions, if moving happens during the first or last months of the year, you will definitely pay less for your moving men and trucks. Yes, seasons matter and affect your moving bill, so it’s best to stay put between the months of May and August, when it’s considered to be the peak season for moving.
4. Roll up those sleeves and prepare the moving scene
Or, in other words, make sure you do everything you can do without the help of professional movers. This includes disassembling furniture and appliances and packing them wisely, so you can always know which parts belong to which item. If you have large appliances, you should check the owner’s manual or the virtual world, including YouTube videos, to see the best way to pack and move them, and do this operation yourself. Dispose of everything that you can dispose of because moving companies usually charge you for the disposal or certain items. Call the moving company and ask them about the things they aren’t able to transport, so you would know what to do with them. Get rid of all that junk that just takes up space and it’s absolutely useless, including the ugly present from the long distance cousin. And pack all your stuff with the help of family and friends. While you can pay them in pizza, the moving guys will not be so easy to please.
5. Free used boxes will save the day and your budget
Don’t go buying plastic containers to use for packing your things or new boxes. Plastic is bad for the environment, takes too much space, it’s rigid and it can easily break during transportation. Used boxes are always there for you to help you pack all sorts of stuff, regardless of their shape, size or fabric. They are flexible, eco-friendly, easy to fit inside the moving van and free. It’s enough to visit supermarkets, electronics stores, Craiglist or even Starbucks, and you will find plenty of free used boxes to help you save a lot of money. Freecycle and recycling centers will also come to your help, as well as office buildings, dorm rooms or simply the neighbors who just moved in and have plenty of boxes to give away.
The US Censuses Bureau shows that an American moves up to 11 times throughout their lives, so we are pretty sure these tips will save you a lot of money.
