Laparoscopic Surgery Explained - Just What Is It Exactly?



Many of you would have probably heard the term laparoscopic surgery at some point in your life and will have wondered what it is exactly. Obviously the word surgery will be known by most people and what it means but laparoscopic is not quite so easy to figure out.

Put rather simplistically, laparoscopic surgery is another term for keyhole surgery. This form of surgery requires the use of some tiny laparoscopic surgical instruments and involves a surgeon making just a very small incision to a patient’s skin when performing operations. Many surgical tools used nowadays have tiny cameras that allow surgeons to see inside a patient without the need to cut them right open.

The main reasons behind using this form of surgery is that patients will be able to recover a lot faster and there will be far less scarring left behind.

Laparoscopic Surgery Goes Back More Than a Century

While many people will not have known too much about what laparoscopic surgery is, until now of course, even some that work in the medical industry will not have known just how far back this kind of surgery actually dates.

Although modern laparoscopic surgical instruments such as those from leading manufacturers were not around at the time, laparoscopic surgery was actually first practiced in the early 1900’s. It was actually 1902 when the first procedures were carried out, though for the first eight years it was only on dogs.

Due to technology not being anywhere near it is today, the evolution of laparoscopic surgery was a slow process.

What Conditions can it Treat?

This is usually one of the first questions when anyone first starts to learn about laparoscopic surgery and a question that is actually answered quite simply. This form of surgery is known to be able to help with a lot of conditions that are known to affect our bodies. Even cancer is treated using laparoscopic surgery these days due to the wonderful technology that has brought highly sophisticated laparoscopic surgical instruments into surgeries across the world.

Many other conditions that affect our internal organs are also treated on a regular basis. Of course, this all requires highly skilled surgeons that have the ability to accurately use laparoscopic surgical instruments.

Laparoscopic surgery has certainly come a long way from its roots but it is evidently clear that this type of surgery is one that will continue to develop in the future and become a vital component of the world’s medical services. The continued development of laparoscopic surgical instruments will no doubt keep pushing our abilities to treat, cure, and heal patients of a wide range of conditions, injuries, and diseases.
