Medicines to Treat Abnormal Heart Rhythm

Heart disease is said to be the leading cause of deaths in the US. Having a heart problem can lead to various complications and the most startling and terrifying result can be death. Most of the deaths recorded in relation to this condition are said to have started with those who experienced heart failure due to irregular heart rhythm patterns.

An abnormal heart beat is something that should not be ignored. Most of these cases are dangerous as they affect the heart’s performance. If the heart’s muscle is damaged, it will have a hard time pumping blood to the brain and the organs. When this happens, one is likely to face a fatal result.

So how would you know if your heart beats at a normal pace?

Diagnostic tests such as those performed through the help of electrocardiograms or ECG devices can help detect the presence of abnormal heart beats. Usually, this condition will result to symptoms like chest pain and dizziness. Most people go to their doctors when they begin to feel warning signs like these. It is important to immediately identify such situations as early diagnosis can give way to early prevention. Better to treat the condition today other than when it is already worse or worst. Aside from the heart’s electrical activity, such tests can also be helpful in the identification of possible heart birth defects, unusual heart muscle size, and problems within the heart valves. Additionally, an ECG device can also help those who were already diagnosed with heart problems monitor if the treatments they are taking or using are working for them or not. Such treatments include medicines, pacemakers, and defibrillators.

Drugs for Irregular Heart Beats

As mentioned, medicines can help in the management of an abnormal heart rhythm. There is this set of drugs called anti-arrhythmic agents that are helpful and useful specially to those people who would like to control arrhythmias and avoid experiencing a heart failure. There are two groups of medicines that are said to be safe and effective in treating irregular heartbeats.
First are the Beta-blockers. As their name denote, they obstruct norepinephrine and epinephrine from attaching to beta receptors in the nerves. Through this, they are able to slow down the heart’s pace. They also help in lowering blood pressure. Their main contribution is their capacity to thwart ventricular arrhythmias. Other uses of beta blockers include the treatment of angina, tremors, pheochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, akithisia, anxiety, and the prevention of migraines.

The second group is Amiodarone. Another type of antiarrhythmics, it also has an ability to control abnormal heart beats by relaxing the heart muscles. It is important to take this medicine as prescribed by the doctor. Similarly, people should be aware of the warning instructions prior to intake. This is because this drug had various side effects and is not useful and effective for everyone with heart problems.

Aside from these medicines, there are also other ways to control an irregular heart rhythm and avoid the dangers of arrhythmia. Take supplements that will boost and maintain the regular supply of potassium, magnesium, and calcium in the blood. Again, as a friendly reminder, do not take any of these medicines if not prescribed by your doctor.
